What are the Magnificent Seven Stocks? - WT Wealth Management January 2025 Special Market Update

The name is a nod to the classic 1960 Western film The Magnificent Seven, which featured seven gunfighters hired to protect a village. In the stock market context, these seven companies are seen as protectors and drivers of market growth, especially during times of economic uncertainty.

The Magnificent Seven (“Mag 7”) are the seven largest publicly traded U.S. companies by market capitalization (cap) in the S&P 500. They combine for approximately $18.5 trillion.

Table 1: Market Cap of the Mag 7

Company Market Capitalization
Apple Inc $3.83T
Microsoft Corp $3.35T
NVIDIA Corp $3.33T
Amazon.com Inc $2.43T
Alphabet Inc $2.40T
Meta Platforms Inc $1.58T
Tesla, Inc $1.53T
Total $18.45T

That is more than six times the size of the nearly $3 trillion market cap of the Russell 2000® Index, which consists of 2,000 small-cap stocks, and one-third of the total of the 500 companies in the S&P 500.

Table 2: The Mag 7 in the S&P 500

Company Market Capitalization %
Apple Inc 7.51%
Microsoft Corp 6.58%
NVIDIA Corp 6.25%
Amazon.com Inc 4.21%
Alphabet Inc 4.07%
Meta Platforms Inc 2.64%
Tesla, Inc 2.59%
Total 33.85%

The Mag 7 has been a driving force of the S&P 500 in recent years. In 2024, they contributed 14.5% of the 25.0% return of the S&P 500 (accounting for nearly 60%!).

Although the Mag 7 are U.S.-based, the group's influence is worldwide with all Companies generating a significant amount of revenue from outside of the U.S. In fact, five of the seven generate more than half of their revenue from overseas, with much of that coming from China.

Table 3: Non-U.S. Revenue Percentage of The Mag 7

Company % of Non-U.S. Revenue (1)
Apple Inc 64%
Microsoft Corp 48%
NVIDIA Corp 62%
Amazon.com Inc 27%
Alphabet Inc 53%
Meta Platforms Inc (2) 62%
Tesla, Inc 51%

Though the composition of the Mag 7 has changed, and will likely continue to change, over time, what hasn’t changed is the growing influence of the largest U.S. companies as they continue to innovate and more profoundly influence the way we live our lives.

These are companies that have quickly become household names. Few would have recognized the name of Nvidia until its meteoric rise from $350B in market cap at the end of 2022 to $3.33T now, though it was founded in 1993. Nvidia has now become synonymous with microchips that will enable the advent of revolutionary artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Or, if you missed it last month on social media, check out my recent video on my favorite stock, Google.

As we turn our calendars to 2025, and the market pundits have submitted their predictions for the stock market (3), regardless of the actual result, it is clear the Mag 7 will be the horse that pulls the cart. Or to be more contemporary - the processor that powers the system.

WT Wealth Management is a manager of Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs). With SMAs, performance can vary widely from investor to investor as each portfolio is individually constructed and managed. In an SMA, each investor may own individual Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), individual equities or mutual funds. As the manager we have the freedom and flexibility to tailor the portfolio to address an individual investor's personal risk tolerance and investment objectives – thus making the account “separate” and distinct from all others we manage. Always seek out the advice of a qualified investment professional before deciding to invest. Investing in stocks, bonds, mutual funds and ETFs carries certain specific risks and part or all of an account's value can be lost. In addition to the normal risks associated with investing, narrowly focused investments, investments in smaller companies, sector and/or thematic ETFs and investments in single countries typically exhibit higher volatility. International, Emerging Market and Frontier Market ETFs, mutual funds and individual securities may involve risk of capital loss from unfavorable fluctuations in currency values, from differences in generally accepted accounting principles or from economic or political instability that other nations experience. Individual bonds, bond mutual funds and bond ETFs will typically decrease in value as interest rates rise. A portion of a municipal bond fund's income may be subject to federal or state income taxes or the alternative minimum tax. Capital gains (short and long-term), if any, are subject to capital gains tax. Diversification and asset allocation may not protect against market risk or investment losses. At WT Wealth Management, we strongly suggest having a personal financial plan in place before making any investment decisions including understanding personal risk tolerance, having clearly outlined investment objectives and a clearly defined investment time horizon.
